Microsoft ha presentado una evolución de su servicio Hotmail hacia un nuevo tipo de email interactivo que permite combinar la consulta del correo electrónico mientras se realizan otras actividades como ver vídeo, consultar perfiles sociales o aceptar amigos. Todo gracias a un acuerdo con cuatro compañías.
Aprovechando su presencia en Web 2.0 Expo de San Francisco, el gigante ha anunciado la integración de Hotmail con cuatro servicios distintos. Desde su cuenta de correo, los usuarios podrán responder inmediatamente peticiones de conexión en LinkedIn, añadir películas a la lista de reproducción de Netflix, ver en qué pujas de LivingSocial siguen activos e incluso comentar directamente en posts a través de Posterous.
Al ser preguntado si pronto se podrá ver algo parecido con Facebook, Dharmesh Mehta, director de Windows Live, respondió como es costumbre que no hay nada que anunciar al respecto. Pero se trata de un socio potencial ya que actualmente el 16% de los correos que pasan por Hotmail tienen Facebook en forma de noticiación de algún tipo y ya se pueden mantener conversaciones entre ambas plataformas.
Una integración sencilla
Esta función permite a las compañías que se han asociado con Microsoft enviar correos con JavaScript embebido, que Hotmail hace correr en un entorno sandbox (es decir, aislado para garantizar la seguridad).
Por eso por el momento solo función en la versión web de Hotmail, pero no en las aplicaciones para móviles o en los clientes de correo. Sin embargo, la compañía espera poder ofrecer el servicio por estas vías en el futuro. Su objetivo es que se acabe convirtiendo en un estándar de la Web.
Mantener al usuario en el correo
Mehta dijo que el 90% de los emails recibidos contienen enlaces a otro tipo de contenido más profundo, ya sea YouTube, LivingSocial o LinkedIn. Son muchos casos distintos, y la media se sitúa en 200 tipos distintos de emails a la semana. Por eso se han planteado como meta que la gente tenga que cambiar de pestaña lo menos posible.
El pasado mes de diciembre, la compañía comenzó a ayudar a simplificar el proceso de visionado del correo electrónico con una herramienta llamada Active Views, la tecnología sobre la que se asienta esta evolución. Al igual que hace Microsoft Office con los vídeos de YouTube, Active Views muestra lo que hay más allá del enlace embebiendo el contenido a visitar. De esta forma, el usuario no tiene que estar saliendo una y otra vez del correo.
Desde que esta función fue activada a finales de 2010 Hotmail ha servido más de 1.000 millones de enlaces como contenido embebido según sus propias estadísticas. Un número que creen que va a seguir creciendo a medida que los usuarios ganen más opciones para quedarse dentro del correo mientras “visitan” el contenido embebido.
Google también comenzó su ronda de integración hace tiempo, por lo que ya es posible utilizar Gmail desde servicios como Flickr o eBay.
